Does Tallow Melt? Caring for Tallow in Warm Weather

The short answer

If your tallow arrived soft, or your jar has gone from firm to melty on a hot day, do not worry. Tallow is a natural animal fat, and like butter or coconut oil it has a low melting point. Warmth softens it, heat can melt it, and cold firms it back up. None of that changes what is in the jar or how well it works on your skin. It is simply the nature of a real, unadulterated fat.

Why it happens

Products full of synthetic stabilizers hold a fixed texture in almost any temperature. Tallow does not contain those, which is exactly why people choose it, so it responds to temperature the way whole foods do. During summer, or in transit in a hot mailbox or delivery truck, a jar can soften or fully liquefy. This is a sign of a clean, natural product, not a defective one.

Does melting ruin it?

No. Melting and resetting does not degrade tallow's fatty acids or vitamins, and it does not make the product unsafe. The only cosmetic quirk is that if a whipped texture melts and resets, it may set slightly denser than the original whip, since the air whipped into it can settle. It still performs exactly the same on your skin.

How to restore the texture

• Place the closed jar in the refrigerator for about an hour, or the freezer for a shorter time, until it firms up.
• If it fully liquefied, gently swirl or stir it before chilling so any separated botanicals redistribute, then let it set.
• Once firm, store it as usual at room temperature away from heat.

Storing tallow well year round

• Keep jars out of direct sunlight and away from heat sources like windowsills and bathrooms that get hot and steamy.
• Close the lid after each use to limit air exposure.
• Use clean, dry fingers or a small spatula so no water gets into the jar.
• In very hot climates, storing tallow in the fridge during summer is perfectly fine.

What about shipping?

Because tallow is heat sensitive, it can arrive soft in warm months. That is expected. Just refrigerate it briefly on arrival to return it to its perfect consistency. This is also why you may see a warm weather note at checkout, it is us being upfront about how a natural product behaves.
