FAQ

General

What is tallow? Tallow is rendered fat from grass-fed cattle, traditionally used for centuries as a skin moisturizer. It is rich in fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K and closely resembles the natural oils in human skin, making it one of the most compatible and effective natural moisturizers available.

What is tallow skincare? Tallow skincare uses rendered beef fat as the base moisturizer instead of water, petroleum, or synthetic ingredients. Because tallow's fatty acid profile is similar to human sebum, it absorbs efficiently and provides deep, lasting moisture without the long ingredient lists found in conventional products.

Why is tallow good for skin? Tallow works because its molecular structure is similar to the lipids that make up your skin barrier. It delivers moisture that integrates into your skin rather than sitting on top. It also contains naturally occurring vitamins A, D, E, and K in a form your skin can readily absorb and use.

Does tallow smell bad? No. Properly rendered, high-quality tallow has a very mild, nearly neutral scent. It does not smell like meat or cooking fat. Many of our products include natural essential oils for a light, pleasant scent, and we also offer unscented options.

Is tallow skincare cruelty-free? Yes. We never test on animals. Our tallow is made from byproducts of animals already raised for food, which reduces waste rather than creating additional demand.

Can vegans use tallow skincare? Tallow is an animal-derived product, so it is not vegan. However, many customers who prioritize ingredient quality and effectiveness over a vegan label choose tallow because of its simplicity and compatibility with skin.

Ingredients & Sourcing

Where does your tallow come from? We source our tallow from 100% organic, grass-fed, pasture-raised cattle raised on trusted farms with ethical and sustainable practices. We use suet, the fat surrounding the kidneys, which produces the cleanest and most nutrient-dense tallow for skincare.

Is your tallow grass-fed and grass-finished? Yes. Our cattle are grass-fed and grass-finished, meaning they are never transitioned to grain feed. The finishing diet directly affects the nutrient profile of the tallow, so this distinction matters for product quality.

How is your tallow rendered? We use a low-temperature wet rendering process that gently separates the fat from connective tissue while preserving the naturally occurring vitamins and fatty acids. Industrial or high-heat rendering can damage these nutrients, which is why our process takes longer but produces a higher quality result.

What other ingredients are in your products? We use a small number of complementary ingredients including rosehip oil, shea butter, castor oil, sea buckthorn oil, wild yam, and vitamin C. Every ingredient is chosen for a specific skin benefit. We never use synthetic fragrances, preservatives, parabens, petroleum, or fillers.

Are there any preservatives in your products? No synthetic preservatives are used. Tallow is naturally shelf-stable because it contains no water, which means bacteria cannot grow in it. Some products include essential oils with natural antimicrobial properties.

Are your products organic? Yes. Our tallow is certified organic and we use organic and wild-foraged botanicals wherever possible.

Do you offer unscented options? Yes. We offer unscented versions of our tallow products for those with sensitivities or anyone who prefers no added fragrance.

Skin Types & Concerns

Is tallow safe for all skin types? Tallow is compatible with most skin types including dry, sensitive, combination, and normal skin. It has a comedogenic rating of approximately 2 out of 5, meaning it has a low to moderate likelihood of clogging pores. If you have very acne-prone skin, we recommend patch testing on a small area first and using a smaller amount.

Is tallow good for sensitive skin? Yes. Tallow is one of the most well-tolerated skincare ingredients available because its composition is so similar to human skin. It contains no synthetic irritants, fragrances, or preservatives. Many people with sensitive skin who react to conventional products find that tallow works without causing irritation.

Can tallow help with eczema, psoriasis, or dry skin conditions? Many customers with eczema and other dry skin conditions report reduced dryness, flaking, and irritation with consistent tallow use. Tallow provides compatible lipids that support the skin barrier, which is often compromised in these conditions. Tallow is not a treatment or cure for any skin condition, but it can support your skin's natural barrier function.

Will tallow clog my pores or cause acne? Tallow has a comedogenic rating of about 2 out of 5, so most people can use it without breakouts. The key is using a small amount on clean skin. If you are very acne-prone, start with a pea-sized amount on your face at night and see how your skin responds over a week or two. Some people experience a brief adjustment period when switching from conventional products.

Will tallow make my skin greasy? No. Tallow absorbs quickly into the skin when used in the right amount. Because its fatty acid profile matches your skin's natural oils, it integrates rather than sitting on the surface. If it feels greasy, you are likely using too much. Start with less than you think you need.

Can children or babies use tallow skincare? Yes. Our unscented and pure tallow products are gentle enough for babies and children. Many parents use tallow as a daily moisturizer, diaper balm, and for cradle cap. Baby skin is thinner and more absorbent than adult skin, which makes clean, minimal ingredients even more important.

Is tallow safe during pregnancy? Yes. Tallow is a natural, single-ingredient product with no synthetic chemicals, retinoids, or other ingredients typically flagged during pregnancy. Many pregnant women choose tallow specifically because of its simplicity and safety. Consult your doctor if you have specific concerns.

Usage

How do I use tallow balm or cream? Apply a small amount to clean, slightly damp skin and massage it in. A little goes a long way. It can be used on the face, body, lips, hands, or anywhere you need moisture. The best time to apply is right after a shower when your skin still has some moisture on it.

How much tallow should I use? For your face, start with a pea-sized amount. For larger body areas, a dime-sized amount. Tallow is concentrated and contains no water like conventional lotions, so you need significantly less per application. If it feels heavy, use less next time.

Can I use tallow on my face? Yes. Tallow works well as a facial moisturizer. Warm a pea-sized amount between your fingertips and press it into clean, slightly damp skin. Most people find it absorbs within a few minutes and leaves skin feeling hydrated without heaviness.

Can I use tallow under makeup? Yes. Apply a thin layer and let it absorb fully (5 to 10 minutes) before applying makeup. Tallow pairs best with mineral and powder foundations. If you use a liquid foundation, test a small area to see how they interact.

Can I use magnesium cream and tallow together? Yes. They complement each other well. Apply magnesium cream first, let it absorb for a few minutes, then apply tallow over the top. The tallow seals in the magnesium and provides lasting moisture. Many customers use magnesium in the evening for sleep and relaxation support, and tallow in the morning for all-day moisture.

Storage & Shelf Life

How should I store my tallow products? Store at room temperature in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Tallow is naturally shelf-stable because it contains no water. You do not need to refrigerate it. In warm climates it may soften, but this does not affect quality or effectiveness.

How long does a jar last? A standard jar typically lasts 4 to 8 weeks with daily use, depending on how much you apply and whether you use it on your face, body, or both. Because tallow is concentrated, most people use far less per application than they would with a conventional lotion.
